Items stored in a vertical carousel or VLM (vertical lift module), are completely encased within the unit for maximum protection and security. There is no access except at the point of picking, so you have superior control over who has the ability to touch your inventory.
In the hospital central supply environment, this can be critical. Medications, surgical kits, and specialized equipment are potential targets for thefts and accessibility is the first - and probably best - line of defense in theft deterrence and detection. A carousel's inherent inventory accuracy also helps.
Horizontal carousels, which feature more open picking, can also be configured to prevent access by partitioning off the sides or installing the carousel against a wall.
