Modular storage systems enhance hospital supply order accuracy

Modular storage: a prescription for productivity in healthcare applications
From central supply to examination rooms to the OR, modular workspace systems help keep hospitals at peak efficiency. The modular building block approach is perfect for space-starved hospitals to preserve expensive square feet. Just as importantly, they enhance the quality of picked orders by helping workers make fewer mistakes.
Retrieval speed is invariably enhanced with modular systems. Items are more accessible, easier to find, and easier to utilize, so workers have fewer chances to make a mistake.
Modular storage is ideal for operational departments, central supply, sterile equipment storage, and other areas.
Some examples of modular storage in hospital applications
Trauma
Center
A level one trauma center is faced with severe cases that demand timely response every day. To speed retrieval time and improve accuracy, the unit replaced standard open shelving with high density modular storage cabinets.
When lost time means a lot more than lost productivity, workers were able to access what they need faster and better due to the highly-organized nature of modular storage.
Constantly changing storage needs and open shelf storage made for poor inventory control and inconsistent response time in emergency environments.
Medical
Distribution Services
Prior to installing a modular storage wall, Hackensack University Medical Distribution Services department utilized wire and metal shelving, plus wooden pallets, to store hundreds of items of varied sizes and shapes.
A regional patient and teaching hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in the state of New Jersey. Hackensack's director of materials management, saw room for improvement in the hospital's Distribution Services department. "We felt that Distribution Services was being slowed by an inefficient storage system, which consisted entirely of wire racking and wooden pallets. Also, the storage space in the 3700 sq. ft. supply room was underutilized."
Hackensack opted to replace its old inflexible, inefficient system with 54 sections of Shallow Depth Storage Wall system. Arranged in nine, convenient, organized rows, the Storage Wall system features high density modular drawers, roll-out trays and adjustable shelves, all of which filled unique roles for the hospital.
Within the drawers, Hackensack stores smaller, faster-moving items, such as ostemy supplies, hand lotions and soaps. Heavier items, including custom packs for surgical procedures, are stored on the roll-out trays. In addition, surgical gloves, suction tubing, gauze, sponging and other bulk supplies are conveniently kept on adjustable shelves above the drawers.
